Successful projects for UK Department for Education and Cabinet Office as partnership brings fresh thinking and a faster, digital approach to global clients.
A new partnership between MatsSoft and Mott MacDonald is bringing fresh thinking and faster digital ways of working to global clients.
Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management and development consultancy, operating in 150 countries with over 16,000 employees. Improvement is at the heart of what Mott MacDonald offers, namely better economic development, better social and environmental outcomes and better businesses.
The partnership has enabled Mott MacDonald and MatsSoft to create an innovation lab that combines process improvement professionals from Mott MacDonald’s Advisory division and MATS platform solution specialists. Together the innovation lab team address digital process improvement and innovation projects across a wide number of Mott MacDonald’s clients, using agile development practices including design thinking, lean startup and agile scrum. They also address digital innovation opportunities within the Mott MacDonald business.
Their fast-paced, disruptive approach has already enabled the team to win prestigious innovation projects at multiple Mott MacDonald clients including
- Delivery of a digital solution for grant awards for the UK Department for Education’s Adoption Support Fund
- A web-based competency assessment solution for UK Government staff, on behalf of the Cabinet Office
- A detailed requirements definition and proof of concept assignment for the UK Ministry of Defence
“The speed with which we’ve been able to deliver significant, tangible benefits for our customers has been very impressive”, says Christian Checkley, Operational Improvement and Assurance Director at Mott MacDonald. “We’re particularly proud of the Adoption Support Fund solution, which has now been running for over a year across 152 local authorities. We built that in two weeks, and had it fully up and running inside six weeks.”
“In fact, one of our challenges has been new clients don’t believe how quickly we can solve problems. That changes when we bring them into the lab and show them the art of the possible.”
The innovation Lab team has also explored a number of ways in which MATS can be used to digitize Mott MacDonald engineering processes with dramatic results. For example, workflows that automate parameter input for repetitive CAD calculations and onward workflow of drawings.
“The automation of design, the automation of expertise, and the embedding of experience, are all prime candidates for digital innovation. It’s a really exciting time as these kinds of innovation will fundamentally change the way that engineering consultancy is delivered in the next couple of years” says Checkley.
Martin Scovell, MATS CEO, commented:
“We’re really proud of the work that we’re doing with Mott MacDonald, particularly the benefits they’re delivering for customers. The innovation lab concept is central to our success, as it allows Motts and their customers to collaborate, at high speed, low-risk and minimal cost to clarify requirements and co-create solutions with a lean startup mentality. That’s compelling compared to traditional high-cost practices that have long been favoured by management consultancies.”
